How often should your kitchen exhaust be cleaned?
Pick what your kitchen cooks and, if you know it, the date of the last full cleaning. The calculator uses the NFPA 96 intervals that most commercial kitchens follow and gives your next due date.
Clean the full exhaust system every 6 months.
- The full system means hood, filters, duct, ESP or ecology unit where fitted, and exhaust fan.
- Clean grease filters much more often, from daily to monthly (how to clean filters).
- Your local authority, landlord, mall or insurer may require a shorter interval. Follow theirs if it is stricter.

How often should a commercial kitchen exhaust be cleaned?
NFPA 96 sets the interval by cooking type and volume: monthly for solid-fuel cooking, quarterly for high-volume cooking, every six months for moderate volume and yearly for low volume. Local authorities, landlords and insurers may require more often.
Does the interval cover the grease filters?
No. Grease filters need cleaning much more often, from daily in heavy frying kitchens to about monthly in light-use kitchens. The interval in this calculator is for the full system: hood, duct, ESP or ecology unit and fan.
Which category is a shawarma or grill restaurant?
Charbroiling and heavy grilling count as high volume, so quarterly. If you cook over charcoal or wood, use solid fuel, which is monthly.
